We are a mobile service company, so it would be convenient to claim that mobile always wins. It does not, and pretending otherwise costs customers money.
Mobile wins decisively on: PM services, inspections, diagnostics, brakes, electrical, HVAC, air systems, and anything where the parts are known before the technician arrives.
A shop wins on: major engine internal work, transmission removal, frame straightening, alignment requiring a rack, and anything needing a lift for extended periods.
The useful rule of thumb is not the size of the job but the certainty of it. If the parts and the procedure are known in advance, mobile is almost always faster and cheaper because it removes two vehicle moves from the process.
